As we close 2021 and the fall term, we look back on the accomplishments, news stories, and updates of some of our students, faculty, and alumni.

Aleph Earth is a groundbreaking collaboration between the UO’s Artificial Intelligence Creative Practice Research Group (AICP) and Grammy Award-nominated vocal quartet New York Polyphony that merges art, music, and technology.

Choreographer, Art Director, Performing Artist and Designer Tumelo Michael Moloi was born in 1981 in the notorious apartheid-era township of Katlehong, south-east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Michael displayed an amazing talent for sports, arts and dance at a very young age. He began his dance career at age 16 as a member of the highly acclaimed South African dance company Via Katlehong. Michael and the dance troupe performed a mix of the street dance forms known as pantsula (South African town dance) and gumboot (mine workers).

1/13/22 Update: COVID-19 Exposure Scenarios and Guidance for Students and Employees

With the understanding that the School of Music and Dance has some distinctively unique teaching/learning and presenting activities, the SOMD puts forward the following proposed policies. 

Victor Steinhardt, pianist, composer, and beloved teacher, passed away peacefully at home on July 30, 2021, in Eugene, Oregon. He was born on March 10, 1943 in Los Angeles,  California. His parents, Mischa and Pearl Steinhardt, were music lovers who encouraged Victor to begin piano lessons at age seven.  Victor studied with Salome Ramras, Aube Tzerko and Rosina Lhevinne. At age ten, he launched his composition career by creating “Hot Air on the G String,” inspired by Bach’s Air on the G String and the novelty piece The Hot Canary.

The internationally acclaimed concert organist, Wolfgang Rübsam, along with his former student, recording artist Dr. Julia Brown, will be in residency at the UO School of Music for the 2021 John D. Hamilton Organ and Harpsichord Visiting Artist Series.

The University of Oregon School of Music and Dance (SOMD) is pleased to announce Dr.

Congratulations to three of the School of Music and Dance violinists who placed at The Music International Grand Prix Competition! The competition is a multi-round international competition for musicians of all ages. Performances were held in Canada, Asia, Europe, and the United States. Originally scheduled to be held in New York City with a winners' concert in Carnegie Hall, the finals were moved to Virginia due to COVID-19 with the winners' concert held at the Hylton Performing Arts Center.
