Boekelheide Commission @ UO Dance in Concert

A choreography commission from the 2021-22 Boekelheide awardee, T. Lang, will play an integral role in the March 3-5 UO Dance in Concert performances.

"As a collaborative-based artist living and working in modern America, I create poetic movement landscapes that investigate the identity, history, and community of this place we call home," says T. Lang.  "I am compelled to create so that others might find reflection. Memory acts as an invisible hand reaching out in search of experiences that are eventually translated to performance by way of my company, T. Lang Dance. I believe these stories are part of the complex fabric of America. At the same time, as a Black woman artist raised among the historically white spaces of conservative midwestern suburbia, I am intimately aware of the many breaks and tears that can exist within this fabric – but also the work that goes into repairing it. I have often been viewed as other and have had to find ways to slip through the cracks of doors that were otherwise closed off to me. Making a way out of no way is simply a thing that I learned how to do without question. The work of building equity and inclusivity into any organization is really the work of cultural cultivation, radical empathy and understanding, and a deep commitment to change on a systemic level. Like many of my peers, I do this work with a focus on the needs of those historically overlooked. However, it is no secret that with any change may also arrive discomfort on the part of those being decentered for the first time. Something my late father always used to say is that there can be no growth in comfort and no comfort when growing. While this is true, one of my great talents lies in my ability to organically build bridges across constituencies. This work, Movement as Medicine, Memory and Meditation has been created, taught and performed in multiple variations throughout several national locations.  This work along with its rehearsal and workshop series, explores and embodies unconventional methods for comprehending and synthesizing diversity, equity and inclusion."

The dance concert runs for three performances. Tickets are available online.
