Admission into the Music Production program takes place during the sophomore year of study at the University of Oregon, with concentration-specific coursework beginning in the junior year. Popular Music majors who meet the application requirements, listed below, may apply.
Application Requirements
In order to be considered for admission, a student must:
- Be a current Popular Music major
- Be at a sophomore standing or higher
- Plan to attend the University of Oregon for at least two more years as an undergraduate student
- Have a GPA of 2.70 (B- average) or higher
- Have completed these three courses with passing grades:
- MUS 151—Popular Songwriting
- MUS 131—Music Theory I
- MUS 134—Aural Skills I
To apply, the student must provide the following by the application deadline listed below:
- Audio or video files of two song-length work samples demonstrating abilities in popular music performance, songwriting, and/or production, with accompanying descriptions of the student’s role(s) in each sample (e.g., “co-songwriter,” “guitarist,” etc.)—the student must provide a hyperlink to an audio or video file of each sample, with samples hosted on YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox, or another website of the student’s choosing.
- A PDF file of a one-page statement discussing the student’s music background, why the student would like to be a Music Production concentrator, and what the student would be able to contribute to the community of students in the concentration (e.g., musical skills, work ethic, etc.)—the student must provide a hyperlink to a PDF file containing the written statement, with the file hosted on Google Drive, Dropbox, or another website of the student’s choosing.
A subcommittee of Popular Music area faculty will convene to determine who will be admitted into the Music Production concentration, then the chair of the area will notify students of the results, and notify the Undergraduate Music Office of students whose Popular Music concentrations should be changed to Music Production, before the opening of registration for the next Fall term.
