John Clement Wood is a PhD candidate in musicology at the University of Oregon. Drawing on his career as a touring musician and composer, his research is concerned with the political, economic, and ecological relations of popular music, focusing on automotive musicality and petrocultures of the United States. His forthcoming dissertation, “A Highway Acoustemology: American Popular Music in the Age of Internal Combustion,” is supported by an AMS 50 Fellowship from the American Musicological Society. Other areas of interest include film history, jazz, American literature, and the history of psychotropic beverages in early modern Europe. His work has been presented at national conferences of the AMS, IASPM-US, and SMT. Before beginning graduate studies at the University of Oregon, John worked as a touring and studio musician, supporting a wide range of popular artists. As a composer and orchestrator, he has created music for dozens of films in collaboration with orchestras around the globe. Among various apprenticeships, John had the special honor of assisting and studying privately with film composer Lalo Schifrin. When not sitting at a computer or a piano, John enjoys being outside. He is an active founding member of Humboldt Musicians for Peace, a community organizing group in Northern California, and is currently training as a steward for forty acres of conservation forest in southern Oregon.
