SOMD CEI Guest Artist and Scholar Series

The SOMD’s Committee for Equity and Inclusion invites faculty (NTTF and TTF) and staff to submit proposals for guest artists and scholars whose presence on campus during a 1- to 2-day visit will further the goals of the SOMD and the university, as articulated in the university’s IDEAL Framework: A Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Funded activities may include

  • invited lectures
  • roundtable discussions or workshops
  • lecture-demonstrations
  • masterclasses
  • other interactive formats that engage the SOMD community

Special consideration will be given to proposals that draw together different areas of the SOMD, or that connect an area of the SOMD with the wider campus community.

Note: faculty and staff seeking funds to support their own research, creative activity, and professional development related to diversity, equity, and inclusion should submit a proposal for a SOMD CEI Mini Grant.

PROPOSAL DEADLINE

There will be two proposal deadlines during this academic year: January 19 and April 15. Please submit proposals via email to deanmus@uoregon.edu, with the subject line “guest artist and scholar proposal”; include all materials in a single PDF if at all possible. Faculty and staff may only be awarded one guest artist/scholar grant per academic year.

PROPOSAL PROCESS

Proposals will be evaluated by members of the CEI, and decisions will be announced by early February. Proposals will be evaluated by members of the CEI, and decisions will be announced within two weeks of each proposal deadline.

REQUIRED MATERIAL

Proposals should include the following:

1. Proposal. A 300- to 500-word statement that introduces the candidate to the committee and clearly explains the planned activity or activities. The statement should articulate how the guest will further the diversity goals of the SOMD and/or the wider university, and articulate which student body (areas, degree programs, graduate and/or undergraduate) will be most directly impacted by the visit. Special consideration will be given to proposals that draw together areas of the SOMD or connect with other areas of campus, and opportunities of this nature should be emphasized in the proposal.

2. CV or Bio. A CV or bio from the nominee, which may be requested directly from the nominee or downloaded from their website.

3. Proposed budget. A detailed budget outlining how the requested funds will be spent, including a total amount requested. Funds may be applied to the cost of travel, accommodations, and honoraria. Please indicate any additional sources of funding for the visit. Note: approximately $9000 in guest artist/scholar funds will be awarded over the course of the academic year. Proposals should range between roughly $750 and $2500.

4. Supporting material (optional). The committee welcomes, but does not require, supporting materials that further introduce the candidate. Applicants may create a document that contains URL links to available files such as articles, audio recordings, videos, websites, or other relevant material; alternatively, applicants may upload PDF files of materials.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Clear articulation of the format and goals of the visit and its potential impact on the student body.
  • Clear articulation of how the planned activity speaks to the goals of the SOMD and the university, as outlined in the university’s IDEAL Framework: A Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. There are myriad ways a project might speak to those goals, including (but not limited to): addressing areas of research or practice that have traditionally been marginalized; providing mentorship for students from underrepresented backgrounds who may not see their identities reflected in their field of study; demonstrating new currents in research and practice that imagine a more diverse future for a given field; and promoting scholars or artists from underrepresented backgrounds whose visit will not only serve students but also benefit the guest’s own career goals, as well as help to diversify representation in the arts and humanities.
  • Feasibility of the proposed budget.
