October 14, 2015—During the week of Nov. 2-7, 2015, the accomplished flutist Elizabeth Rowe, a native of Eugene, Ore., will take a break from her position with the Boston Symphony Orchestra to visit her old hometown.
Rowe is slated for a full week of residency activities, a guest of the Oregon Mozart Players and the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance. The residency will include two concerts and three academic events, with the public invited to all of Rowe’s appearances.
The School of Music and Dance has named Rowe a 2015 Trotter Visiting Professor, a mark of distinction reserved for honored guest artists and scholars.
"As a young person I was shaped by the rich vitality of Eugene's classical music culture,” said Rowe. “I'm so excited to be retuning to the place where I developed my love of music, and I look forward to working with the vibrant artists that form the heart and soul of Eugene's musical community.”
"Having an artist of Elizabeth's stature returning to work with the arts community of Eugene is a coup for both organizations,” said Kelly Kuo, artistic director of Oregon Mozart Players.
“We are thrilled that Elizabeth will be able to share her journey with us and know that we, as well as the next generations of aspiring musicians, will benefit greatly from her residency,” Kuo continued.
Molly Barth, UO associate professor of flute, echoed Kuo’s sentiments, stating, “"The students at the University of Oregon are incredibly lucky to be able to learn from such an expert in the field. Elizabeth will be on campus working with all of the orchestral students, and will be immersed in the wind program.”
Rowe graduated from South Eugene High School in 1992, then received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Southern California, where she was a Trustee Scholar and a student of Jim Walker, former principal flute of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Rowe joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2004 and holds the Walter Piston Principal Flute Chair. She has been featured in solo BSO appearances on numerous occasions. In 2011 she was a featured soloist in the orchestra’s West Coast tour, with a reprise performance of the Carter Flute Concerto.
Rowe has also held titled positions with the orchestras of Fort Wayne, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., and was a member of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach. She is a member of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players.
Noted for her insightful teaching, Rowe currently serves on the faculties of the New England Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center, and is a regular guest artist at the National Orchestral Institute of Music and the New World Symphony.
