Associate Professor of Music Theory Drew Nobile is the recipent of a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend. The grant will help fund research for his upcoming project, Voicing Form in Rock and Pop, 1991–2020. Nobile's book looks at the relationship between vocal timbre and song form in popular music of the last 30 years, with case-study chapters on Alanis Morissette, early-2000s indie, and Beyoncé. By considering voice to play a central structural role in this repertoire, the book aims to expand traditional conceptions of musical structure beyond the so-called “primary parameters” of harmony and melody, thus challenging the idea that sound and structure are fundamentally opposed.
